Awards and recognition Porat won the Kinor David prize, awarded by Yedioth Ahronoth, on three occasions; in, and Inshe received the Israel prize for her lifetime achievement in theater. In January Porat auditioned at Habimah, but she was told she had to learn Hebrew.
When their arrival was delayed, Porat approached the Ohel theater, which rejected her on the grounds of unsuitability of style. Undaunted, she tried the Cameri Theater, auditioned, and was accepted. The first production in which she already thought in Hebrew, free from the tension of acting in a to her incomprehensible language, was Lady Precious Stream The suggestion was accepted.
Yemima Millo also worked with Porat on her diction, aiming to soften her German accent. Though Porat created an impression of a tough, unyielding woman, shewas easy to work with, neither recalcitrant nor stubborn, never offended and heeding the comments of others. While she was a versatile actor, she mostly performed women of strong, obstinate, determined, and tough character.
Because of her love of nature and the European winter landscape, she several times took a leave of absence to vacation in Europe, occasionally also performing there. In her honor the theater was renamed the Orna Porat Theater for Children and Youth and she remains its honorary president. After her retirement Porat continued working energetically, occasionally appearing in several productions simultaneously.
Three documentary movies have been made about her life, one of them in German and two in Hebrew and In she was one of eleven people awarded the Emet Prize for excellence in academia and culture.

This first lesson is designed to help students develop an understanding of the difference between a biography which is narrative nonfiction and expository nonfiction.
Share the stack of mentor texts along with the nonexamples of biographies which should be expository nonfiction. Encourage them to make notes on post-its and mark the spots in the text. These differences will help students begin to develop an understanding of the differences. When students have completed their noticings, pull them together as a class and give them time to share what they found.
Observations for expository nonfiction might include: gives directions, tells all about an object or animal, explains something, includes dates, has bold words, has a table of contents, includes a glossary, has an index.
