I imagine art provided me with the distance and perspective necessary to survive and begin to understand an otherwise overwhelming world. My father was born in Russia, my grandma in Lithuania, most of our neighbors were immigrants who hated one another and then the displaced people from the war in Europe came to overwhelm everyone else so no one would feel left out.

I wrote stories, poems and plays about this material. I was in many ways living in the past. And I kept failing to do justice to this material, until I tried it in the one form that came most naturally to me, poetry. I began it just after completing my first book of poetry in 15 years, The Holy Worm of Praise Harcourt It came quickly. The entire process took less than a year.

It was joyous. Finally, when I was 57, I was living in the present firmly enough to write about the past. I write mostly in my study, in my house in East Hampton. I love to teach, I realized that early on. Grandma would say, with kind affection, that I love to hear the sound of my own voice. Which no doubt is true. Teaching is an essential part of my writing.

Teaching is a kind of thinking and since I enjoy entertaining people I sometimes use humor and pathos maybe too much pathos to make my point. In fact, my method of teaching is based on my method of writing. Like so many writers, I first take the course of least resistance and then proceed from there. One Boston radio critic likens Keillor and his "down-comforter voice" to "a hypnotist intoning, 'You are getting sleepy now'," while noting that Keillor does play to listeners' intelligence. On September 7,Keillor was briefly hospitalized after suffering a minor stroke. He returned to work a few days later. In addition, the coordinator said that Keillor arrived at the church, declined an introduction, and took the stage without an opportunity to mingle with the audience, so he did not know when these warnings might have been dispensed.

The publicist concurred, saying that Keillor did not have contact with any church members or people in the audience before he spoke. Supposedly, before Keillor's remarks, participants at the event had considered the visit to have been cordial and warm. Asked to respond, Keillor stuck to his story, describing the people who advised him not to discuss politics and saying that he did not have security guards at other stops on the tour.

InKeillor wrote a column that in part criticized "stereotypical" gay parents, who he said were "sardonic fellows with fussy hair who live in over-decorated apartments with a striped sofa and a small weird dog and who worship campy performers.
