On the contrary, he maintained that these are the factors that divide human beings and bring about conflict and war, and that we are all human beings first.

He was a philosopher whose teachings of more than 20, words are published in more than 75 books, audiocassettes, and videocassettes. Krishnamurti took on the challenge of modern scientists and psychologists and went with them step by step, discussed their theories and sometimes enabled them to discern the limitations of those theories. Krishnamurti left a large body of literature in the form of public talks, writings, discussions with teachers and students, with scientists and religious figures, conversations with individuals, television and radio interviews, and letters.

Many of these have been published as books, and audio and video recordings. Write a Review. Create a free account to discover what your friends think of this book! Community Reviews.

I enjoy the way Krishnamurti engages with children and shares his ideas, ideas that even challenge the teachers and parents sitting in the room. The way he talks about the hypocrisy of idealists, for example, is quite intriguing.

I also appreciate the way he examines the pitfalls of religion--especially the ritualistic aspects that require one to merely mimic and rarely understand. Also, I love his discussion of education, particularly the dialectic between memorising and understanding. I just wish that schools would actually confront the fears they face and consider this challenge seriously so that examinations, which require memorisation, could be abolished and research, inquiry, and projects, which demand understanding, could be put in their stead.

Real peace is as creative and as pure as war is destructive; and to find that peace, one must understand beauty.

That is why it is important, while you are very young, to have beauty about us - the beauty of buildings that have proper proportions, the beauty of cleanliness, of quiet talk among the elders. In understanding what beauty is, we shall know love, for the understanding of beauty is the peace of the heart. And how are you to find out what is the purpose of life when you yourself are confused?

Surely, as long as you are confused, you can only receive an anwser which is also confused. If your mind is disturbed, if it is not really quiet, whatever answer you receive will be through this screen of confusion, anxiety, fear; therefore the answer will be perverted. So the important thing is not to ask what is the purpose of life, but to clear away the confusion that is within you.

It is there. It is understanding that is creative, not memory, not remembrance. And understanding is not in the future. The mere cultivation of memory brings about the idea of the future; but if you understand directly, that is, if you see something very clearly for yourself, then there is no problem. What is important, then, is not what you know, not the knowledge or the experience you have gathered, but to see things as they are and to understand them immediately.
